11 Lessons From my First Year of Business

September marks one year of KM Studio. What started as a side hustle—a merging of my love for creativity and wellness — has grown into something so fulfilling. I never expected my passions would lead me here, but KM Studio is proof that when you follow what lights you up, the universe will meet you halfway.

Taking the leap into full-time business has been equal parts exciting and exhilarating, as it has been daunting and, at times, a little delusional. There’s something surreal about watching your vision come to life, while also feeling completely overwhelmed by the responsibility that comes with it.

Being a business owner (a title I’m still getting used to) feels strange to me. Imposter syndrome has a way of creeping in with thoughts like, "who am I to own a business?" or "what do I even know?". There are days where it still doesn’t feel real that I actually work for myself. It was a goal I had on my heart for so long, and embracing this identity (and believing that I’m worthy of this role) has been one of the biggest internal hurdles.

This first year of KM Studio has shown me resilience, passion, excitement, nerves, doubt, and growth in ways I could never have anticipated. It’s tested my limits and expanded my comfort zone, but ultimately, it’s shown me what I’m truly capable of. Looking back, there are a few lessons that have guided me along the way, and I hope sharing them might inspire anyone else who’s just starting out on their own business journey.

1. Trust & Surrender

One of the biggest lessons I’ve learned is the importance of trusting the process and surrendering to the flow of business. Some periods of business are slower than others, and in those moments, it’s easy to fall into panic or doubt. But I’ve come to realise that the quiet periods are just part of the journey. You have to trust believe that the universe has your back (and that you’ve got your own back!). Surrendering doesn’t mean giving up—it means releasing the need for control and allowing space for things to unfold in their own time.

2. Rest is Productive

I quickly fell into the trap of working around the clock—weekends, nights, and early mornings. While dedication is important, I’ve learned that rest is equally crucial. You simply cannot pour from an empty cup. Taking breaks, stepping away from your work, and spending time doing the things you love, with who you love, aren’t just luxuries—they’re necessities. Resting allows you to recharge, come back with fresh perspectives, and ultimately work more effectively.

3. View Mistakes as Lessons

One of the most freeing concepts has been learning to view mistakes as lessons rather than failures. When things don’t go according to plan, instead of taking it personally, I’ve learned to see it as a chance to adjust and grow. Each ‘mistake’ is a stepping stone to better understanding my clients, my business, or myself. Embracing this mindset has made it easier to navigate the inevitable ups and downs of business with resilience and grace.

4. Everyone is Winging It

The more I connect and chat with other business owners, the more I realised that no one actually has everything figured out. We’re all navigating the unknown, learning as we go. Understanding this made me feel less alone and helped ease the pressure of thinking I had to have it all together. It’s comforting to know that others are facing the same challenges, doubts, and uncertainties. We’re all in this together, figuring it out step by step.

5. Some Days Are Harder Than Others

Even when you’re doing what you love and working with dream clients (hello, dream!), some days will inevitably be tougher than others. This lesson has taught me to accept that having challenging times doesn’t mean I’m failing or that my passion is falling. It’s a normal part of the business journey. Understanding and accepting this has helped me to approach the harder days with more compassion and patience, knowing that they are a part of the bigger picture.

6. Surround Yourself with Support

The impact of your daily conversations and the company you keep cannot be underestimated. Surrounding yourself with a supportive network of other business owners, family, friends and mentors can uplift you, keep you going, provide you with valuable feedback, and offer a listening ear. The right support system is so so crucial to the business journey and the mindset piece that comes with it.

7. Don’t Fear Pivoting, Especially in the Beginning

KM Studio began as one thing and has continued to evolve. Embracing change, and being open to pivoting, has been so important, especially in the early stages of business. Whether it’s shifting your entire business model or refining your offerings, flexibility allows you to adapt to new opportunities and challenges. Listening to that inner voice guiding you towards change is the perfect place to start.

8. Progress Over Perfection

If there’s one thing that held me back in the beginning, it was the pursuit of perfection. I spent too much time obsessing over absolutely e v e r y t h i n g —so much so that it slowed me down, and, in some cases, completely stopped me from sharing my work or reaching out to clients. My perfectionism almost always leads to procrastination, and it’s something that I’m still figuring out.

What I’ve learned is that the more you put yourself out there, even if it’s not perfect, the quicker you learn and improve. Progress will always outweigh perfection.

9. Set Boundaries for Balance

Another one I’m still working on - boundaries. Maintaining a healthy work-life balance is essential for the sustainability of your biz. Setting clear boundaries with yourself and those you work with helps prevent burnout and keeps your passion and energy alive. This includes defining work hours, taking regular breaks, and ensuring you have time to just live you damn life.

10. Keep Learning & Growing

The business journey is ongoing, and there’s always something new to learn. If you don’t know something, just Google it! Remember Lesson Number 4 - everyone else is also winging it.

11. Celebrate Every Win, Big or Small

This is my most recent learning. It’s sooooo easy to get caught up in chasing the next goal and overlook the small wins along the way. Celebrate every moment, no matter how small! Reflecting and celebrating, I’ve found, has helped to boost my confidence and has kept me present on the journey.

As I reflect on this past year, I reflect on how each lesson has played a pivotal role in guiding me through the highs and lows of business. From learning to trust and surrender to celebrating every small win, these lessons have truly shaped one of the most pivotal years of my life!

I hope this reflection has inspired you or provided you with comfort, wherever you are in your journey.

Until next time,

K x
